In the course of the 2nd annual meeting of the technical community Fluid Dynamics and Separation (FDTT) in September in Bamberg (Germany), Dr. Jose Luis Solà Cervera explained the improved features of the latest in-house development of High Capacity Structured Packings RMP SP 250-1 and RMP SP 250-2 (preliminary names) of RVT.
Two modifications of the High Capacity Structured Packing (RMP SP 250-1 and RMP SP 250-2) with 250m2/m3 specific surface area were tested and analyzed by the SRP (Separation Research Program) at the University of Texas, Austin, regarding their mass transfer efficiency, pressure drop and capacity with the standard system cyclohexane/n-heptane at four operating pressures: 0.165, 0.33, 1.65 and 4.14 bar.
The results have been compared with those of the Standard High Capacity Packing RMP S 250.
The High Capacity Packing modification 1 (RMP SP 250-1) shows very similar mass transfer, pressure drop and capacity figures at all operating pressures compared to RMP S 250. It therefore can be used as a possible alternative to the standard version.
The High Capacity Packing modification 2 (RMP SP 250-2) stands out through a significant increase in packing capacity of 15% and an astonishing 30% reduction in pressure drop whereas maintaining the same mass transfer efficiency.
The application of the new High Capacity Packing modification RMP SP 250-2 offers considerable advantages. For new column design, investment costs could be saved substantially by reducing the tower diameters. In existing towers, throughput can be significantly increased without losing mass transfer efficiency.
